Don’t you love when you get to peace out early on a Friday while everyone is still working and the roads are light with traffic?

How about when you get to extend your vacation by a day and get 1 more day some place special?

Do you ever trade your workout time in order to participate in the get away day or stay a day later options?

Does it bother you when you miss this workout and it disrupts your routine, progress and momentum?

Do you ever notice that on one hand you’re excited to get away early and to be able to take advantage of the early start and/or you’re excited to get one more day of being away, before returning to your full life and the accompanying responsibilities,

and on another hand,

you notice that you don’t move or feel as well, you’re metabolism isn’t as fast and you feel a little sluggish and slow or that because you took the extra day, you not only have to hit the ground running, but you haven’t yet adjusted from the return travel, time zone and getting settled and your body hasn’t gotten right since you were last home, so you’re not hitting the ground running as your best self?  Ever notice that?

Get Away Days!

Way back when in 2008, when I was creating Change Your Body Boot Camps at my dining room table, with all my books and notepads and dvd’s (remember those) spread before me and I was going through my SWOT’s and creating my mission and vision statements, target client, elevator pitch, first draft marketing pieces, flyers and website, I was making my schedule.

And when I was making my schedule I knew that I wanted our Friday’s to be like when I worked for the Red Sox and we had get away days, which were random, 1pm or 2pm games in a season full of 7pm games that allowed us to finish our baseball game earlier and still be able to travel and get to the next destination at a reasonable time, which would allow us to get rest and have a better chance of winning the next day and a lower chance of getting injured from being under rested.

So I decided that the 9am would be the last group workout of the day.  I wouldn’t add an evening class even if there was the option, so everyone could have that same rested feeling when they got where they were going and they would be presenting their best selves to that destination.

Smart Planning

Fast forward 16+ years and I love when my clients take advantage of this and when I’m able to take advantage of this.  It’s so rewarding.  You get your:

  • workout in
  • keep momentum
  • keep making progress
  • prime your day
  • peak for wherever you go

Priming means you turn everything on

Peaking means you present your best self to whatever is important to you.

Get A Jump Start Days

A get a jump start day is any day in which you need to get a jump start, or rip the band aid off.  The reference to this story however is returning from being away and getting in a workout as soon as possible to help you transition from somewhere else, recover from somewhere else and get back to feeling like normal and feeling better so you can restart your momentum and get back to living your life, so you can prime yourself and hit the ground running.

  • recover from travel
  • accelerate your transition
  • restart momentum
  • restart progress
  • prime your yourself
  • peak for wherever you go

This can happen on any day that you’re returning to your life and responsibilities when you want to get back to feeling like your best self and get ready for what comes next for you.  Get A Jump Start Days can also can happen whenever you arrive somewhere like when you get to the destination on of getaway day or if you travel for work (my uncle used to go for a run, upon checking into the hotel, whenever he traveled for work).

In Change Your Body Boot Camps, it organically happens on Monday nights, when people take a long or longer weekend by taking Monday off, returning late on Monday and then joining the Monday nights group workout so they can get a jump start on their Tuesday.

Get Away Days in Action

Just this week 2 clients took advantage of the Get Away Day idea.  On Monday 1 client, did 45 of the 60min, and then headed to the airport for a work trip.

He:

  • got his workout in
  • kept his momentum going
  • kept his progress going
  • primed his day
  • and peaked and/or presented his best self to something he cared about

Then Wednesday, another client had a get away day and got up early, so she could get her workout in before heading to the airport.  She also:

  • got her workout in
  • kept her momentum going
  • kept her progress going
  • primed her day
  • and peaked and/or presented her best self to something she cared about

This is a big deal.  It’s so easy to skip b/c of all the valid reasons people might have, but in their cases, they made time and prioritized getting their workout in because it was important to them.

Get A Jump Start Days in Action

Labor Day Monday is an annual no boot camp day, however we had to do a make up class and a handful of people chose to come and Get A Jump Start on their Tuesday.  I really admired this choice by each person because it works and it’s effective.

Have you ever participated in a get away day workout and/or a get a jump start workout?

If yes, isn’t it fascinating how much better you feel inside and how much feeling better inside, exudes itself outside.  You’re more magnetic.  Your alertness is sharper.  Your words and brain works faster.  Your body feels good and strong.  Your energy is high.  Your metabolism is working fast.  All positive benefits.

If no, give it a shot.  You’ll be glad you did.  Neither the getaway day workout, nor the get a jump start workout has to be perfect.  The first client who trained Monday, only did 45 of the 60 minutes (75%), or the 2nd client on Wednesday who trained 3 hours earlier and probably wasn’t as strong as she normally was because of the earlier start and less sleep.  They both checked the boxes for:

  • got workout in
  • kept momentum
  • made progress
  • primed day
  • peaked for what they cared about

How about you?
